Beginner SEO Tips for Your Existing Web Pages and Blog Posts

1. Optimize Your Page Title and Meta Description

Start with the page title (also called the title tag) and meta description. These elements appear in the Google search results and give searchers their first impression of your content.

Head into your CMS and take a look at your top web pages. If the meta tags are missing or generic, it’s time for an update.

Page Title (Title Tag):

  • Aim for 50–60 characters
  • Include your target keyword and location if relevant (for example: “Personalized Donuts | St Louis”)
  • Make sure it accurately reflects the content on the page

Meta Description:

  • Max 156 characters
  • Summarize the page content and use keywords near the beginning
  • Write copy that encourages clicks and supports your content marketing strategy

You may find that Google will override your meta descriptions in the search results.  This can be frustrating but it’s still a good idea to write your own. Google uses your description 30-60% of the time, especially when it accurately summarizes the page.

📌 Easy SEO tip: Start with your highest-value pages like your services, products, or key blog posts, then work your way down.

2. Use Descriptive Image File Names

A powerful SEO tip that often gets overlooked: rename your image files before uploading. Search engines like Google crawl file names, so don’t upload “Image_001.jpg.” Use your main keyword in the filename, like “custom-donuts-st-louis.jpg.”

3. Add Alt Text to Every Image

Alt text helps screen readers describe images to visually impaired users, which supports accessibility and improves user experience. It’s also an SEO opportunity to use keywords naturally.

Note, if the image is decorative like an icon or a stock image, use alt=”” for your alt text. This will tell screen readers to ignore the image and improve your accessibility.

4. Include Your Keyword in H1 and H2 Tags

Your H1 tag should clearly reflect the specific topic of the page and include your target keyword. Use H2s to break up sections and reinforce related keywords. This structure makes your content easier to scan by users and feeds Google’s algorithm.

5. Use Keywords Early in Your Content

This is one of the most important on-page SEO tips. Mention your specific keyword within the first 100 words of your page. Align your copy with search intent and make it clear to both searchers and search engine algorithms that they’ve landed in the right place.

Think about the reader’s experience. They type in “personalized donuts” into the Google search bar.  Your page shows up in the search results. It shows your page title and meta descriptions that both talk about personalized donuts. They click on your search result and land on your web page where they see personalized donuts in the hero and in the first section of copy.  They know they have found what they were looking for.

6. Use Anchor Text in Internal Links

Internal linking helps both users and search engines understand how your pages connect. Be intentional with your anchor text, instead of writing “click here,” link from related keyword terms. This improves crawlability and supports your long-term strategy for higher rankings.

Keeping with our donuts example, let’s say you are working on a page about catering donuts.  You might include a section that introduces the idea of personalized donuts with a cross link to the page you are optimizing for the keyword “personalized donuts.” Highlight “personalized donuts” as your anchor text with the link.

Beginner SEO Tips for Your New Web Pages and Blog Posts

Let’s talk about your workflow going forward. These steps will help you create high-quality content that’s optimized from the start.

7. Do Keyword Research First

Before writing a new blog post, use keyword research tools like Google Search Console, Google Analytics, or the free versions of Ahrefs and SEMrush. Start with seed keywords, then look at long-tail keywords, short-tail keywords, questions with your target keywords and related keywords and synonyms.

Aim for keywords with a good balance of search volume and low to medium competition. This gives you the best chance of ranking on the first page of Google.

🔍 Easy way to compare:

  • “Custom donuts” = 1,000 monthly searches, difficulty 14
  • “Personalized donuts” = 140 monthly searches, difficulty 15

Both are relevant, but “custom donuts” has far more potential to bring in organic search results. In this case, if you create a new page about personalized donuts, you will be missing out on a ton of search volume!  Your time investment for writing and creating a new web page is the same for each keyword but the results could be dramatically different!

8. Write Listicles When Possible

Listicles like “10 Tips for Better SEO” or “9 Common Mistakes to Avoid” rank well because they align with how users scan content. They’re also great for schema markup, which can earn you a featured snippet in search engine result pages. (NOTE: this article is a listicle! See how easy it is to scan!)

9. Use Bullets, Bold Text, and Subheaders

Formatting matters. Break up text with bullet points, bolded phrases, and clear subheaders. This improves readability on mobile devices and boosts user experience, which is an actual ranking factor. Bold subheadings keeps the user scrolling and increases the time spent on the page which is a positive signal to Google that your content is relevant to the search term.

10. Create Custom Graphics and Images

High-quality websites stand out visually. Create simple graphics that reinforce your topic or highlight quotes, definitions, or listicle points. Custom images also give you a chance to rank in Google Image Search.

Branded visuals also help you stand out on social media and build recognition over time.

Tools like Canva are an easy way to design your own even without a full creative team.

11. Request Indexing in Google Search Console

After publishing new content, don’t wait. Go to Google Search Console, paste your new page’s URL, and request indexing. This can speed up your appearance in organic search results and support your ongoing SEO strategy.

12. Don’t Panic Over SEO Sales Emails

Getting cold emails about your technical SEO, backlinks, or a long list of issues? Take them with a grain of salt. It’s common for SEO vendors to send generic audits. But only you and your team know your goals, constraints, and content priorities.

Stick to best practices, keep building high-quality content, and ignore the noise.

If you’re just starting out, these SEO tips for beginners will give you a strong foundation. Focus on what matters most: clear structure, relevant information, and great content that meets your target audience’s needs.
