A recent report from Goldman Sachs predicting that 300 million jobs worldwide would be degraded or lost due to artificial intelligence has been making headlines—and this time around—it is white-collar workers that are worried.
Historically, workers without a college degree have been hit hardest when technological advancements are applied to industry. But in the 21st Century, it is the manual laborers that can rest easy about their job security, but the contract lawyers and administrators may have cause for concern.
The reality is that this new chapter in technological advancement will be on par with the creation of the personal computer, if not significantly greater-–in the market disruptions it will cause—it is estimated that two in three jobs will be exposed to some sort of significant development due to generative AI.
According to McKinsey, “Generative artificial intelligence (AI) describes algorithms (such as ChatGPT) that can be used to create new content, including audio, code, images, text, simulations, and videos. Recent breakthroughs in the field have the potential to drastically change the way we approach content creation.”
Goldman is also predicting that generative AI could raise GDP by 7%—-driving this prediction is the speculated increase in productivity related to leveraging AI. If you can figure out how to harness AI, you stand to make a lot of money.
In this new world, there will be winners and losers—-and nobody wants to be a loser. The horizon poses serious questions about where you should apply your human and financial capital in order to come out as a winner.
How to Become a Winner
First of all, be great at what you do, and then look for ways to have AI be your assistant.
For example, if an AI could take your job as a writer, then you probably aren’t a very good writer. For now, AI writing kind of sucks, but AI chatbots are awesome at research. This means you can leverage AI to help you move through the research stage faster to put out an excellent quality piece more quickly.
If you can become someone who can get 2/3 of the rote work done using a generative AI or LLM, you’ll be able to work faster and more efficiently and thus become a more valuable team member.
If you really know your field, stay on top of and understand what is happening with the developments in AI, you’ll be able to use it and apply it in your work.
