Thousands of miles away from home with myriad duties, it may seem impossible for military medical personnel to get the continuing medical education (CME) they need to retain their certification.
Swank Healthcare's free Department of Defense Education iOS app makes it possible.
The online healthcare education distributor partnered with Integrity's mobile app development team to allow military medical personnel to take CME courses from virtually anywhere.
The app features hundreds of courses spanning 18 medical professions. Completing courses is as easy as watching a course video, taking a test and completing a course evaluation.
Once a course is finished, its status instantly is marked as completed. Users can also view their course history so they’re always aware of their progress.
While similar to the civilian app Integrity built for Swank Healthcare, the military app features a unique visual design and a special barcode scanner. Rather than entering their site code, ID and password manually, military members can scan their CAC/ECA ID card and instantly log in.
Once inside, users experience a straightforward interface: simple navigation, easy-to-read text and clear calls to action.
We used a custom API to connect to Swank Healthcare's course library and database of military members. We also used the Objective-C programming language and Apple’s Xcode integrated development environment during app development.
"The app ensures military medical personnel can provide the best care to patients by keeping their certifications up to date," Integrity Partner and Chief Creative Officer Ed Morrissey said. "It's an honor for us to use our talents on a project that helps those who sacrifice so much."
Swank Healthcare's Department of Defense Education app is available on the App Store and is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
